Hundeernährung: BARF

Biologically Artgerechtes Raw Food

more often than you hear the term BARF dog owners. In many forums to read your statement: "I barf my dog." Also, there are now several books on the subject and even the mirror BARF dedicated in September 2008 article.

But what is BARF and what does this abbreviation?

the term BARF stands for Bones and Raw Food (bones and raw food) or for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food, which in German is often translated as Biologically Artgerechtes Raw diets. The Canadian Debbie Tripp was the first to the term BARF. However, the original idea came from the Australian veterinarian Dr. Ian Billinghurst. In 1993, it published on the subject, the book "Give Your Dog a Bone".

The term refers to the BARF diet of the dog with raw meat, bones, raw vegetables and some other additions to the original diet of the wolf, the ancestor of our domestic dog imitate. In the wild feeds on a wolf, not only in muscle meat but also of the stomach contents of its prey, as well as berries, insects, herbs, small rodents etc.
It is believed that the digestive tract and the physiology of the dog, in spite of the domestication is to compare well with that of the wolf. The time span of 15 000 years, since the dog lives with humans is proven, too short to make a related change in evolution of the digestive tract possible.

It is often pointed out the danger of salmonella in raw meat and worms. Another argument against BARF often the risk of tooth fracture, or even the violation is called by bone fragments.

I realize only some of the arguments for and against the Rohernährung have listed by dogs as any dog owner himself has to make a picture of himself and ultimately the advantages and disadvantages of each feeding method has to weigh.

My own dogs are gebarft for just over 1.5 years. I opted for this method of feeding, since one of my dogs do not tolerate different cereals.

Junior (2006 - 2008)

In Erinnerung: Junior

Von Hunde Blog

In June 2008, Junior has left us. That it is a medium sized, very slender and young dog gets bloat - so we did not anticipate.

Our dog was not one of the breeds where bloat occurs frequently, yet he had a large and deep chest. Often it is said that this disease occurs after eating. Again, this was not the case with us. Although I had just served our dogs their nightly dose, but Junior did not eat already.

The symptoms were immediately very clear: our dog trying to vomit, but could not even liquid disgorge it more. He was very rough and the stomach / abdomen swollen hard and easy.
Junior was within minutes already in a state of shock!

We could do it now achieve our vet and come to his office, where Junior had to be stabilized first, before it was ever to think of an intervention. Unfortunately, Junior died before the surgery, although it was passed between the first symptoms and the trip to the vet less than half an hour.

I knew that when making bloat immediate action by the veterinarian and the chances of survival are so much higher, the sooner you get professional help. Unfortunately this was not enough for Junior!

Junior was a fantastic dog ... and I am writing this not only because he was my dog! Although he spent the first months of life on the street, he got used very well and quite easily to a "regular" dog's life. Although Tommy
initially not very enthusiastic about it was to have another dog at his side was clear but after a few weeks ago that all the dogs got along very well together and, at least in my eyes, a pack of dogs were ideal.

Junior was born in February 2006 in the Pineta of Santa Cesarea Terme. His and the mother of our Bruna were littermates, which had as puppies do not have direct contact with humans and, accordingly, of course, could not touch. However, it was Junior's mother (we had them in the name Tata, dt nanny baptized) in relation to man curious as Bruno's mother. Tata was famous and infamous for their interest in any material and shape, which meant that they stole everything-like substance! We have caught, as she has clothes carried away in a hotel pool. Towels on our line in front of her were never sure.

Junior had the same interest of substances of any kind before he "fixed" moved in with us, he was observed as he has "robbed" with another drifter, the car wash of a hotel ... Accordingly, our
high losses of bedspreads, stockings, bedding and shoes, as a junior at first we lived in the house. Of course, this was annoying from time to time for me, but if I leave lying around now even my beloved flip-flops, then I probably deserve it no different than from my dog proudly presented in a few chewed shoes to get.

The education of junior for me was very educational and interesting. Since he did not thought of it to go on a lead (even a collar for him was hard to bear), I have moved the leash to a later date and I limited to his will, to follow me willingly, deliberately "exploit" . The first step was the heeling and "on foot" to go, what he was really like ... praise and cuddles were sufficient to motivate him! The step after that the line was almost a snap because he already went very well with me.

We have a wonderful time spent together, the only way too shortly. I hope that the time Junior was happy with us ... We will never forget him!
